Greetings everyone and welcome to MONSTER MONTH! This month,
we’ll be focussing on the life and career of stop-motion animation legend Ray
Harryhausen, paying homage to a number of his classic films, including Jason and the Argonauts (1963) and Clash of the Titans (1981), as well as
some of his more obscure, earlier feature film experiments, such as It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955) and Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956). In
addition to taking a retrospective look at some highlights from his
filmography, we will also delve into his home life, inspiration, and how he
revolutionised a filmic art, in the form of an extended biography. The first
entry (due to be posted later today) will provide a simple, brief summary of
the life of Harryhausen in the form of a fact-file. There will also be several
posts focussing on monster movies and monster-inspired movies outside of
Harryhausen’s canon, including a somewhat tangential look at Pixar’s upcoming The Good Dinosaur (2015) towards the end
of the month.
Keep coming back for
more entries on the man behind the monsters.
I’ll keep you posted.
Michael (and Felix).
